Based from the textbook, the two journeys of Hannibal & Mao Zedong are quite different in many aspects. Hannibal Barca was born in Carthage, North Africa, was the commander of the army, and was made by his father to promise to hate the Romans. “The Hannibal crosses the Alps” journey was started to declare war to the Romans from Spain to Italy in 218 BC. Mao Zedong, on the other hand, was the leader of the Red Army, who tried to escape from the Nationalist Government. His father, however, was an ambitious but illiterate farmer, who wanted his son to have the education he didn’t have. Mao Zedong marched along with 86,000 men and 30 women. On the contrary, Hannibal journey is composed of 90,000 men and 37 elephants, which made their journey a lot easier. As the result, there were 36,000 remainders from Hannibal troops, which were 32,000 remained more than Mao Zedong. Although, Hannibal journey had elephants, his journey was harder than Mao Zedong in terms of combat since they didn’t have any guns, as they were low in technology. In the end, both Hannibal and Mao Zedong were respected by many people. Upon Hannibal’s defeat, even though he committed suicide, he was recognized as one of the greatest military leaders in the history while Mao’s Little Red Book was published throughout the country to spread Mao Zedong’s ideas.
