They should be good communicators, and actually listen to their patients, or families concerns, empathize, and provide clear concise information. An important value a healthcare worker should also embody is altruism. Nurses and medical professionals need prioritize their patients’ needs, without any regard for rewards or benefits. A persons’ health and welfare needs to be priority to a nurse, no matter what the situation. Josie’s Story highlighted the importance of altruism, and the need for nurses and doctors to take a step back and truly listen.

My personal philosophy of nursing seeks to incorporate the art of conveying nursing science holistically with care and human dignity. The four nursing metaparadigm concepts are described in relation to nursing as a science and an art and provide the base upon which my view of nursing and my personal philosophy are derived. As a nursing student at UIC, I am well aware of the fact that the best outcome for any patient may not be improvement in health, but rather, a dignified death during the end of life care. End of life care includes a significant quality in care and human dignity.
When a patient is at the end of life it is very important to value the patients self dignity and their decisions at the mere end of their lives. The end of life care is to relieve the weight of the patient 's shoulders physically and mentally. I approve of end of life caring. Basic end of life care is summarized by improving the care of quality of life and dignity of the ill person. The important themes to good ethics of end of life care is a combination of human rights,respect,dignified care,and privacy.

This philosophy reflects the lesson in Matthew 7:12, which states, “ So everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets”. I personally value the characteristic of kindness, which encompasses active listening, professionalism, and accountability. In order to be kind, nurses must actively invest time in their patients and express to them that they care for them and their family members. My belief is that if my family member was in the hospital I would want the nurse to show kindness to them, therefore I will show compassion to others family members. I value the art of kindness, because sometimes it is not easy to show love to patients who are combative or disrespectful.
Every nursing, in order to consider the profession must have an understanding of at least three of the five professional values, in my opinion. These values consist of altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity and social justice (Taylor 96). Beginning with the professional value of Altruism, the believe in or practice and self concern for the well-being of others (96). I believe that in order to be the best nurse you can be for your patients, you must understand the concept of altruism. As a nurse, your profession is to take care of people, if you do not know the professional value of altruism than you cannot possibly understand how important it is to care about the wellbeing of your patient.
A hospice provides a more suitable environment for those at the final stages of their lives compared to a hospital for a multitude of reasons. Hospice care is designed to care for all aspects of the person life; they provide physical, mental, and religious services, as well as caring for the patient’s family. Since hospice care is also available at home, the patient has the opportunity to die in familiar surroundings. On the contrary, hospital care provides primarily physical services to the patient and is focused on the patient’s disease. Also, dying in a hospital can be less pleasant because a connotation of hospitals is illness which is a negative quality compared to that of a home, where a person is surrounded by their memories and belongings.
My Personal Philosophy and Values of Nursing Nursing is proving care, support, and serve people who are in need. The purpose of nursing is to improve patient 's health condition to a better life. The professional nursing values I believe are things you can be taught and some you cannot. Nurses are special individuals who ultimately want to care for and help others as much as they can. I agree with all of these values and believe some I will need to work on myself such as competence, illness prevention and patient education. Others I believe I have based on my experience I have already had while caring for others. Some of the qualities I believe I have include: caring, compassion, dependability, empathy, focusing on the patient- defining quality of life, having a holistic patient centered care, kindness, openness to learning, respect for others their dignity and worth and sensitivity.
Being a nurse is not always as easy and picture perfect as people paint it to be. A nurse is expected to act perfectly professional, even when tears, anger and all-around emotions are begging to come out. A nurse must always be the one that has their life together, especially when others do not. They are there to be the ones to hold and care for others in desperate times of need. Nurses are expected to be more than just a nurse, but rather an advocate, caregiver, support system and professional.
Dorothea Orem’s Theories Dorothea Orem was an extravagant nursing theorist whose theories were first published in 1971 (Dorothea Orem 's Self-Care Theory, 2014). Orem established several fascinating theories of nursing which are still are current in today’s nursing. Orem proposed three nursing theories that are identified as: self-care theory, theory of Self-care deficit and theory of nursing system (Dorothea Orem 's Self-Care Theory, 2014). Orem’s nursing theories are defined as a grand theory (Nursing Theories: An Overview, 2014). Grand theory is defined as an abstract outline under which the key conceptions and values of the discipline can be acknowledged (Nursing Theories: An Overview, 2014).
Nursing is a responsibility to provide the finest care regardless of the patient’s age, race, religion, sex, disability, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or their past. Nurses must keep up to date on education, new processes, policies and keep informed about new laws and regulations in healthcare, so outstanding healthcare can be administered. Philosophy of Nursing Everyone’s values and beliefs about the profession of nursing are all different. The four concepts of nursing are interrelated and all mean something different to every person, too. Throughout this paper, I will be reflecting on my values and beliefs about nursing through the four concepts while comparing them to a nursing theorist with views that are most similar to my own.
