In 1933 the world had two new leaders. In the United States Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected President, and in Germany Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany. Both leaders delivered speeches meant to inspire, unite and delineate their plan to lead each nation out of the depression. President Roosevelt’s proclaimed that the key to leadership was one of a people unified helping one another free of the fear that had been encouraged by previous administrations… “Let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself”… (para. 1)… “In every dark hour our national life, a leadership of frankness and vigor has met with understanding and support of the people themselves which is essential to victory" (para.,1). As for Hitler, he proclaimed, it was the failure of current and past leaders that brought about the past fourteen years of destitution and only the nationalist party lead by himself could get them out of such grave circumstances if given the chance “Now people of Germany, give us four years and then pass judgment upon us” “we shall start now” (para., 26). According to Roosevelt, "Our greatest primary task is to put people to work” (para., 10). His plan for creating work involved government funded programs to tackle infrastructure, improve people’s lives and daily functions, done by hiring citizens to work on these programs. Hitler’s plan also addressed creating work programs however his approach was twofold, he was to have “Compulsory labor-services and a back-to-the-land policy” (para., 18).
