In the books The Catcher in the Rye, and The Great Gatsby both J.D. Salinger and F.Scott Fitzgerald wrote about two phony characters name Holden and Gatsby. They are phonies because they lie about everything, even simple stuff like their names. The person who is phonier between Holden and Gatsby is Gatsby. He lied about his whole life basically Gatsby lied about his name, covered up a murder, and lied about what school he went too. Gatsby biggest problem is he lied about his name. He tried to cover up his past life by giving them a false name. “ Jay Gatz - that was really, or at least legally his name” (75). This shows that Gatsby lied about his name and told them something totally different to make other people think otherwise about his name. “ The idea was that they were lying to someone that they could potentially deceive” ( The lying game). “ then he gave instructions that the car wasn't to be taken out under any circumstances and this was strange, because the front right fender needed repair” (121). This shows that Gatsby was covering up something that had nothing to do with him and he only made him look suspicious by telling them not to uncover the car. “ They were lying on behalf of another person, but the lie was spontaneous and told with an intention mislead” ( The lying game).
