America is a land of immigrants. People come from all parts of the world to experience the American dream. These two pieces of literature are focused on Japanese Americans and Mexican Americans. “A long, long time ago,” Americans aspired to achieve the American Dream. But, what happens when the dream that so many longed for begins to change? This original yearning for success and individual freedom was something that bound this country together. Two of the main aspects that added to this unity was baseball, labeled as the national pastime, and music, which was seen as universal. Poet, Earnest Lawrence Thayer, and songwriter, Don McLean, illustrate these two activities and how all things eventually evolve over time.

Using the poems’ structures, and poetic techniques, and overall messages, both Keys and Hughes demonstrate their unique perspectives about America that are both historically significant to helping readers better understand our country’s history. In “America”, Claude McKay, the author, finds himself struggling to find how he feels. At some points, he has a positive attitude towards America, but at other times, it is extremely negative. His attitude changes constantly. In the poem “America,” Claude McKay has a conflicted tone of anger and respect towards America through diction and figurative language. McKay effectively uses diction to convey his tone.
Sandburg writes about Chicago and the negative aspects of the city. Although Chicago is being seen as a dangerous place, Sandburg declares it is still a prosperous city with people proud to be a part of it and its accomplishments. He challenges those to find a city that has a more “lifted head singing so proud to be alive and coarse” than Chicago does (Sandburg). He praises the Americans as they are “fierce as a dog with a tongue lapping for action…planning, building, breaking, and rebuilding” (Sandburg). Likewise, Foss writes in his poem about the type of character needed for the American society to conquer the vast array of land in the West.

Authors Walt Whitman and Langston Hughes are two authors in American Literature whose poetry is both debated and praised by critics. "I Hear America Singing" by Walt Whitman and "I, Too, Sing America" by Langston Hughes have sparked many discussions on their controversial content. Walt Whitman was the first of the two authors to write, followed by Langston Hughes who was influenced by Whitman's work. While Whitman's poem, "I Hear America Singing" reflects the happiness of the American people, the poem written by Hughes takes a different approach.
In the two poems, “I Hear America Singing,” and, “I, Too,” there are many similarities and differences that show us that know matter what is happening you have to stand up for yourself and do what you love. We see this in the two poems, “I Hear America Singing,” and, “I, Too” when the authors, Walt Whitman and Langston Hughes, both talk about what America was a like in the 1900s, and how people were doing jobs that they had liked to do. We can see how a African American man would stand up for himself and we see this in the poem “I, Too” because we are able to see how he was able to stand up to everyone else and prove he was able to be treated like anyone else.

In this essay I will be talking about the Americans Voice, this is characterized by three different themes work, unity, and diversity. In these different themes, I have three specific type of evidence that will support my characteristics towards the American Voice. There are two type of evidence that are poems entitled “ I hear America Singing” by Walt Whitman, and “ I Too Sing America” by Langston Hughes. The third piece of evidence is a speech written by Patrick Henry entitled “ Give me Liberty or Give me Death” The American Voice is The American Voice is represented by the theme of hard work.
A song that includes various examples of literary devices is “Firework” composed by Katy Perry. The most important literary devices used in the song “Firework” are metaphor, hyperbole, and simile. One of the literary devices found in the song “Firework” is a metaphor. A metaphor helps tell a phrase or sentence in a more figurative way. Artists will use metaphors to make a sentence or phrase more interesting for the listener to stay interested in the song.
The second speaker also reshapes the first two lines of the entire poem into a plea to the majority. Beforehand, the first speaker uses those lines as a call for the old American spirit to be revived: “Let America be America again / Let it be the dream it used to be” (1-2). Both speakers change the meaning of the lines to express their thoughts on America. As a result, the poem expresses the desire for everyone to be treated equally in the land of freedom. The readers can relate to the speaker because they wish that everyone has equal rights in the country that proclaims itself to be the symbol of freedom.
