All of her life, Isobel (Precious) was treated poorly. Ever since she was a young girl, when she made a sound, precious gems would fall from her mouth. This seems as though it would be a blessing, however, it ended up being more of a curse to Isobel. Isobel was treated as nothing more than a paycheck ever since this curse came about and lived a life of never standing up for herself. Frederick Douglass was a slave since the day he was born. He had to live a life of being whipped, beaten, starved, and constantly mistreated. He was always passed around to different masters and had to undergo the wrath of however each one would treat him. Of course, being a slave Douglass had to keep his mouth shut and do whatever his master told him, this lead to never being able to stand up for himself. Although the stories of both Precious and Fredrick Douglass are very different, justice prevails for both of them in the end. Both of the characters experienced justice. They stood up for themselves and experienced the excellent consequences of it. As Isobel stated, “It was when I was standing outside waiting for the police that I realized that nothing had fallen from my mouth when I made the telephone call. I chuckled first, then I laughed. Just sounds, only sounds.” (255) Isobel was so happy at what the outcome of standing up for herself was. Frederick Douglass stated, “I did not hesitate to let it be known of me, that the white man who expected to succeed in whipping, must also succeed in killing me.” (268) Douglass had received justice, he had finally stood up for himself and received a beautiful reward in doing so. I believe justice is the ethical or moral outcome of a given situation and Frederick Douglass and Precious both received
