The Similar Aspects between Jimmy and Charlie Matshona Dhilwayo once said: “The wise are greatly revered, the righteous are exceedingly honoured, and the foolish are repeatedly disgraced” (2023). This quote perfectly summarizes the relationship of similarity between Charlie Robinson from E. Pauline Johnson's short story A Red Girls Reasoning and Jimmy in Thomas King’s short story Totem. The authors share many similarities, including their culture and thoughts, actions, and trauma from consequences. Charlie has been arguing with his wife for a while and gets angry the longer it goes on. Christine tries to explain her perspective and de-escalate the situation; however, Charlie would not back down. ‘He caught her by the wrists; his small white teeth were locked tightly, his blue eyes blazed into hers’ when he said, “Christine, do you dare doubt my honour towards you? You, whom I should have died for” (Johnson 9). Charlie takes his anger out on Christine. He hurt the woman he had just married because he could not understand how influential her culture was and how it was a simple tradition. His actions towards her were uncalled for, as he almost broke her arm. Correspondingly, Jimmy experiences being impulsive in a harmful manner. Later in the night, after the gallery closed, everyone went back to the gallery. They prepared themselves with safety equipment. Jimmy cuts down the totem pole. “Lame held the totem pole and Jimmy cut through the base, the chain screaming, the wood chips flying all around the gallery” (King 2). In this situation, they know they were in the wrong because they had to sneak in after it was closed. This quote proves they knew it was wrong but did it anyway. Jimmy takes action toward cutting down the totem and does not think twice. He thought it was the best decision. They knew what they were doing wrong. Jimmy was uneducated, which ultimately led to disrespectful behaviour. This highlights the importance of not only knowing the significance of artwork but also understanding the reasoning behind it before making decisions.
