During the colonial period numerous new things were taking place, people were gaining independence and literature was developing. By 1763 there was over 12,000 separate works published in North America. Both Chronicle of the Narvaez Expedition and Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson detail the author’s journeys during certain period of their lives. Religious devotion is apparent throughout both books in many different ways. Rowlandson and de Vaca look to God for comfort, to help them meet their needs and to guide them.
During the Progressive Era Jane Addams and W.E.B. Bois were very influential individuals, Addams helped improve women’s rights and those in poverty by co-finding Chicago’s Hull House while Bois helped the progression of African Americans by fighting for equal rights. Addams and Bois were among the most influential people in the Progressive Era reforms. Jane Addams is known as the mother of social work because the fought for the rights of minority groups. She was also a leader of women suffrages and she fought for world peace. We have all seen the Disney movie Pocahontas, but what we did not know what the historical differences and similarities between the two. Pocahontas was a daughter of the chief of the Powhatan Indians, and served as a mediator for her people and the English in both the movie and her life. Though the battle of colonizing the New World and converting the Indians to Christianity was much more violent in real life. She went on to marry Englishman John Rolfe, and changed her name to a more civilized name, Rebecca and became a leader and historical figure in colonization of the New World. Later in life she would become a beckon of hope for the English that they would be able to colonize the New world and convert the indigenous people to Christianity.

The two poems I will be comparing and contrasting in this essay are two of William Shakespeare 's most popular sonnets. Sonnets in chapter 19, 'Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? ', and in chapter 23, 'Let me not to the marriage of true minds, ' of our Literature book. Both of these poems deal with the subject of love but each poem deals with its subject matter in a slightly different way. Each also has a different purpose and audience. In the case of 'Shall I compare thee ' the audience is meant to be the person Shakespeare is writing the sonnet about.
Donne 's poem showcased a more refined explanation of love, while Shakespeare simply defined what it should be. What stood out most from Donne’s poem was the ability to make it personal. Every line makes the reader feel something; it draws the reader into the text and allows them to make connections. Shakespeare just doesn’t do that; he sticks to the definition love and gives no opportunity to add personal meaning to his writing. When talking about love, a poem must make a connection.
