The Industrial Revolution economically and militarily separated western countries from the rest of the world and prompted the development of a strong european ethnocentrism. This application of western standards on developing states is what incited the foundation of the immoral act of colonialism. Both Karl Marx and John Stuart Mill reject the idea that there exists inherit universal rights while entertaining a progressive view of history. This conjestial view of the past combined with their ideas of human rights creates a justification for any event from history as means to an end which is morally wrong, however, out of the two, only Mill provides a principal basis that allows the destructiveness of colonialism to be curved. He understood that there could be many issues with colonial rule due to the one sided perspective imperial powers had. He explained that “He who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that.”. Indeed, he knew that it was very hard to eliminate any bias perspective one had from the position of European states. They lacked insight on the affairs on the colony and therefore, were lead to establish inequalities. The philosopher added: “Nor is it enough that he should hear the opinions of adversaries from his own teachers, presented as they state them, and accompanied by what they offer as refutations. He must be able to hear them from persons who actually believe them...he must know them in their most plausible and persuasive form.”. In order to eliminate any misrule in the colonies, they needed more insight from their perspective. This idea introduced well the solution he had to help them remain equitable. John Stuart Mill declared that there had to be a certain body of government created within the colonies in which representatives were immersed in the local society so they could have a fair and wise judgment. These individuals had to not have any financial implications within the colony yet, had to be fully integrated in it.
