Huck lives in a time and place where African-Americans are legally not human, so that influences Huck's brain, causing him to see Jim as a slave. For example, when Jim and Huck become separated in the fog, Huck plays a rude trick. He says to Jim that they were never lost and there was no fog. Jim gives a whole speech to Huck, explaining how Huck made him feel like trash. Huck believing that Jim wasn't smart enough to figure the lie out, as well as lying to him at all, shows that Huck feels as though he is above Jim intellectually.
Bildungsroman tells that tale of an adolescent boy, who goes on a journey where he grows and develops. Billy Budd in Herman Melville’s Billy Budd and Huckleberry Finn in Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn both present heroes that do not fully develop by the end of their respective novels. We are to conclude about each with regard to the world of adult authority that there weren’t many respective role models around to guide them otherwise. Billy and Huckleberry both go on different courses through their novels, surrounded by adult figures. And yet, neither of them fully develop (and in the case of Billy, will never get the chance to).
One challenge of Huck’s was the moral debate of slavery and the regard of JIm. Huck stated, “ People will call me a low down abolitionist and despise me”(Twain 52). As you can see Huck has doubt about helping Jim because of his race. Huck grew up in the south where slavery was their way of life and growing up there strongly influenced how he thinks about race. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is an American classic, it was the starting point for all great American Literature. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has been awarded all of these honorable titles because of its abnormal and controversial plot line. During the time period when the book was written, it was unacceptable to view African- American’s as anything other than slaves. They were viewed as inferior to whites and were treated like property, they had no rights. The main character of the book, Huck, disagrees and disobeys these norms and pushes the boundaries of society when he becomes friends with a slave from his childhood; Jim.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Essay: The river in the novel, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" is a significant place where rules of society are forgotten and Huck and Jims relationship is built. While on the river, Huck seems to put aside everything he has learned from society and forms a strong relationship with a black slave, all in his willing. Society has no influence on Huck while traveling on the river which allows his friendship with Jim expand overtime.

Although each story is very different, There are many similarities within these characters, as well as differences. Huckleberry Finn came from a very peculiar background. He never truly found a place that was his home, but he had lived in many different places. He was not given a formal education prior to living with the widow, but he was not as unintelligent as everyone suspected.
Authors of classic American literature often utilize a character’s development to establish a worldview or opinion. In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Great Gatsby, Mark Twain and F. Scott Fitzgerald use their narrators, Huck Finn and Nick Carraway, to suggest an argument about American society. Seeking adventure, both characters embark on a journey, but their encounters with society leave them appalled. While they each have personal motives for abandoning their past, both end up interacting with different cultures that lead them to a similar decision about society and their futures. Ultimately, they stray from the dominant culture in order to escape the influence of society.
As a result Huck sees Jim as an equal and a friend. Jim also played a role in the maturing of Huck because, “Clearly Jim’s androgynous roles enables Huck to shape a viable system of ethics and expand his capacity for sympathy, tenderness, and basic goodness” (Wasserstein). As a result of Huck’s perception of Jim changing as Huck matures, the relationship between the two becomes stronger due to Huck realizing Jim is a friend and someone he cares
Huck would be characterized as a proponent of individuality rather than conformity. Furthermore, Huck did not apprehend slavery and its contribution to productivity. Slavery is so inhumane and blacks should have just as much rights as whites. Towards the end of the novel, Huck’s true innocence is shown when he helps Jim escape his confinement at the Phelps’ house. Innocence got the better of him since he was debating whether he should inform Ms. Watson about Jim’s dilemma or should he save him.
In Mark Twain’s book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Twain uses literary devices, to display the theme of friendship. Mark Twain uses Huck and Jim to symbolize how strong their bond is even though they are from two different worlds. Firstly, Jim is introduced in the story as Ms. Watson runaway slave. Later in the story Huck discovers Jim on an island called Jackson Island, and both created a bond quickly while on the island.

The historical novel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, written by Mark Twain in 1884, has many literary elements to generate a good plot and compose a good story. Twain introduces the characters, the major ones being Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer, as well as Jim. Finn was a white, poor child, who unlike Sawyer was not very dramatic in his way of life. Tom Sawyer read a lot and knew how to make any situation thrilling.
