Throughout Steinbeck’s story, Of Mice and Men Steinbeck introduces two opposite characters, George Milton and Lennie Small. These two characters show a unique friendship that can inspire others. Steinbeck puts their friendship to the test many of times. Somehow these two opposite characters continue would do anything for each other, but somehow enough may not be enough got the unlikely pair. Steinbeck shows that Lennie has some sort of brain disorder but that doesn’t stop George from being his father figure. Steinbeck uses the two characters to show how any two people can share a friendship no matter how different. In chapter one of Of Mice and Men Steinbeck introduces the main characters, Lennie Small and George Milton. Steinbeck uses these two characters to show that George acts as a father figure to Lennie. A reason why may be When Lennie is in the barn with Curley’s wife Lennie panics when Curley’s wife begins to scream. He then puts his hand over her mouth and nose while she struggles and he then kills her by doing so. (Steinbeck 91). People may assume that because Lennie killed Curley’s wife that he is crazy. However, that is not the case. Earlier in the book George tells that Lennie gets scared and panics and then does something bad that he didn’t mean to do. This is due to his brain disorder not because he is crazy. George speaks to slim after Lennie killed Curley’s wife and says, “He never done this to be mean.” (Steinbeck 97). This shows that Lennie is not crazy because he did not do what he did to be mean. Although Lennie may do some bad things he is never does anything to be mean. Therefore, Lennie’s tendency to panic and do bad things is due to his brain
