The two novels “The Great Gatsby” and “Ma Rainey's Black Bottom” are very similar in character and in themes. These two novels are important because they both represent what it was like for African Americans to try and make it to the “American dream”. It shows perseverance and how having connections and privileges benefits you in certain aspects. Throughout these novels we get introduced to characters who are similar in many ways.The first connection I've made was Tom and Sturdyvant. In “The Great Gatsby”Tom is a character who is wealthy, owns businesses, has a beautiful wife & daughter, has power, and is classified as living the American dream. The final connection I've made is Gatsby and Ma. The first reason they connect is because they are the two main characters in each reading. Both Ma and Gabsy are alike because when they have power they tend to abuse it. In “The Great Gatsby” Gatsby spends the beginning of his life away at boot camp, college, and with his best friend.
