Similarities Between Macbeth And Scrooge

At the beginning on the novels we saw instant comparisons between Scrooge and Macbeth. Scrooge is an old, rich man who much prefers being isolated where-as, Macbeth is one of the most famous examples of a tragic hero. Similar to most heroes; Macbeth has a “fatal flaw” which, in Macbeth’s case, is ambition and obsession. On the other hand, Scrooge’s is loneliness and anger.

Macbeth appears in the first act to be strong and powerful, physically and mentally. This is shown through the smilie “Like Valour’s minion carved out his passage till he faced slave”. This shows that Macbeth does not give up easily; this can be proved through “till he faced the slave”. This is shown through “Hard and sharp as flint…and solitary as an oyster”. This implies that Scrooge is bitter towards other people, the adjective ‘sharp’ further emphasises this. From the simile ‘solitary as an oyster’ we realise that Scrooge is very independent and much prefers to be isolated from the real world. In comparison, Macbeth is the complete opposite as he is loyal. “He is so valiant” this means that Macbeth always carries out tasks that he has been set and will go out of his way to help anyone in need. They both have completely different personalities towards the start of their novels. This is shown through “which the eye fears when it is done, to see”. It shows that Macbeth has strong feelings of guilt because of his actions. This certain quote emphasises thats what he has done is bad however, it has reached the stage where it is too late to go back and right his wrong-doings. The reader may have some sympathy towards Macbeth at this point as he understands the horrific event that he carried out but, they would still have hatred towards him as he did it in the first place. On the other hand, Scrooge is cold-hearted. “The cold within him froze his old features.” This proves that Scrooge was already old and miserable looking through his facial features. However, the grumpiness within him further promotes that cold feel to make him look even more miserable. This makes the readers feel uncomfortable as he is always so blunt and rude towards
