Do you know the similarities between McCarthy and Abigail? Through this essay I am going to be pointing out their similarities. The Crucible and McCarthyism have many similarities about their actions, thoughts, and behavior. They had many things in common but the three I choose were they accused people,started off strong and finished with no victories, they both ruin people's lives. 1 Abigail accused people and anybody names were offered with not knowing what could happen after they were released. During this time it was crucial that everyone stayed loyal to their country. There was a war going on called the Cold War. if you were being disloyal to your county you could get brutally punished. On October 10,1947 members of Hollywood film industry announced communist influence in the american motion picture business (WIlliams). McCarthy accused the Hollywood blacklist of communist which changed their life dramastically. 10 received jail time and were banned from working for the major Hollywood studios(Williams). It was hard for them to cope because they were not able to work and they were put in jail for things they didn't even do. Mccarthy most known targets were Owen Lattimore and Val Lorwin.¨In june 1953, J.B. Matthews was appointed as McCarthy's research director. In July, Matthews published an article called "Reds in our churches" in the conservative American Mercury. In it, Matthews referred to the Protestant clergy as " the largest single group supporting the Communist apparatus in the United States.(Victims of McCarthyism)". When she first started off the judges believed her and she was able to do whatever she wanted to do because they believed her. Who ever name she called they believed her they took the people to jail and even hung people that she said was guilty. The people in the town believed her to and started to share the word that witches is in the town. They feared her and wanted to stay out of her way so she wouldn't accused them. Her friends fear her that's how much power she had. She threatened and manipulated her friends into lying about people being a witch. She gave them a little power when they all began yelling out names of the witches but that didn't last long. The family was believing the words that she was saying and she swore she didnt do it so they believe that because she wouldn't lie on God name. Her family started to see the end before she did and started to see all the things that were affected by her decision.
