Numerous individuals panicked and lived in fear, believing that the witches were amongst them, as inferred in the book "The Crucible". This caused tons of commotion within their society. In todays world, there are still situations similar to this that are occurring. The most recent one was in the early 20th century when many people believed there were communist within their society ready and prepared to go against the United States, which was called the 1st Red Scare. Both the Red Scare and the Salem Witch Trials (in "The Crucibles") caused a great deal of chaos, and people began to accuse each other of different actions against their community.

Almost every kid in school has read a passage or a story, and never really understood the purpose of learning the topic in school. The teachers expect us to do the work, and hopefully understand it, but we never truly understand why we learned such a topic or event. The Crucible is a prime example on what students read in school, or why we’re obligated to read the book. The crucible and McCarthyism have many similarities that many people over look, and don’t realize, and connects more than we perceive. Books like the crucible and McCarthy are historical events, many schools have very few books based on historical events, which is why teachers spend more time on them.
Fear, it causes people to be blinded by the truth. People can’t tell right from wrong. Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible to show how no one could see what was right. During the 1950’s communism was spreading throughout Europe like a wildfire, then it slowly made its way over to the U.S. This was known as The Red Scare.
Do you know the similarities between McCarthy and Abigail? Through this essay I am going to be pointing out their similarities. The Crucible and McCarthyism have many similarities about their actions, thoughts, and behavior. They had many things in common but the three I choose were they accused people,started off strong and finished with no victories, they both ruin people's lives. 1 Abigail accused people and anybody names were offered with not knowing what could happen after they were released. When they first started to this huge lie they didn't expect it to go as far as it went.

He grew with great power in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s He would go after the people in the State department. Not only would he go after the state department, but he would go after the US Army and started interrogating soldiers and accusing them of being communist. The Hollywood Film industry was also heavily targeted accusing many actors, writers, and producers.
In the play, The Crucible, Salem, Massachusetts, along with the United States during McCarthyism, is engulfed with paranoia. Although both situations include different causes, their effects are strikingly similar. For instance, throughout The Crucible, Abigail Williams is being shown repeatedly accusing innocent people of witchcraft. Her actions begin sending the small town into a panic as they throw people into jail and hang them in an effort to try and cleanse the town from any aspect of evil. Similarly, throughout 1950-1954, Joseph McCarthy falsely accused people within the United States Government of being a member of the Communist party.

At the same time, it can be seen as a story from the McCarthy era, which was a time of political repression and anti-communist hysteria in the United States in the 1950s, it was also known as the Red Scare. The Red Scare was a period of time where people were scared of Communism since after WWl, the Russian leaders were overthrown and they encouraged other countries to rise up and do so as well. It was distinctly seen first in the 1600s during the Salem Witch Trials, which is portrayed through the play, “The Crucible”. It happened when talk of witchcraft scattered the town of Salem, making everyone hysterical and constantly accusing people of being witches without proof. Behavior similar to this came back in the mid 1900s when society was accusing people of being communist during a time of fearing Hitler. This is what led to the definition of McCarthyism, which states in the dictionary, “A vociferous campaign against alleged communists in the United States government and other institutions carried out under Senator Joseph McCarthy in the period 1950–54. Many of the accused were blacklisted or lost their jobs, although most did not in fact belong to the Communist Party.”
