Kate Broadbent Mrs. Higgins English 2B 05 March 2024. President Nixon and The Turning Point of the Watergate Scandal 50 years ago “I am not a crook” was infamously said by President Richard M. Nixon. Yet, this statement seemed to be untrue because he was the only president to resign due to his choices during his presidency. Even though Nixon wasn’t directly involved with the break-in, he helped orchestrate the cover-up. The results of the Watergate scandal created huge impacts, revealing flaws within the government and interfering with public views toward presidents. Two journalists, Bernstein and Woodward, took the challenge of digging into the criminal actions behind the Nixon administration. Fame came with the story, raising the men to the top of their field. According to Mather, “The success of Woodward’s and Bernstein’s investigation initiated changes in the profession of journalism, creating the “celebrity journalist,” which changed expectations of the public and budding journalists”. The scandal sparked the interest of journalists, becoming a significant moment that fueled their curiosity and created a turning point in investigative reporting. “[Watergate] also had a dramatic influence on journalism, sparking interest in investigative reporting by thousands of journalists and students, and setting an example for generations of reporters to come” (“Watergate US”).
