In the short story The Most Dangerous Game, the author Richard Connell shows that Rainsford needs control of his emotions, patience , and expert hunting and decision making skills in order to defeat Zaroff. Rainsford needs to gain control of his emotions to outthink Zaroff, who symbolizes Rainsfords "steep hill". When he finds that he is going to be hunted his natural instinct is to run and panic, but then he stops to look around and get a grip on the task at hand. Then at a critical moment when Zaroff finds him in a tree, Rainsford panics again because he realizes Zaroff is on his trail and is toying with him. Once again, he gains control of his emotions and formulates a plan.
Rainsford also had to kill Zaroff to be able to sleep in the bed. When he says he's never slept in a better bed, that is kind of demonstrating he was happy that he killed him and he got to sleep in the amazing bed. Count Zaroff is a calculating killer, not only of animals, but people as well. On the first pages, when he and Rainsford were eating dinner, Zaroff is watching Rainsford eat in this new habitat Zaroff has put him in. Zaroff asks rainsford “perhaps you were surprised I recognized you... I have read all books on hunting in English, French and Russian” (Connell 45). Rainsford ends up playing General Zaroff’s game and becomes the huntee while Zaroff is the hunter. Zaroff loses the game and gets killed by Rainsford.
Rainsford Killed General Zaroff Rainsford was the most justified in killing his enemy. He was more justified, because General Zaroff bought an island just to hunt people. Zaroff first helped them by feeding them, giving them new clothes, and letting them stay in his house, and sleep in his bedrooms, that he had in his mansion. After a few weeks later by letting them stay in he will tell them that he will hunt them down and use their head as a trophy by the success he made. Zaroff had killed many innocent lives, just for the fun of it.
“The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph,” said Thomas Paine. During “The Most Dangerous Game,” Rainsford had to survive three nights as prey for General Zaroff. Rainsford, though, was only able to live due to the setting serving as a solution to the conflict. At the very end of the narrative, Rainsford’s options become increasingly more limited as time progresses. However, he is able to jump off of the large cliff and regain his freedom.
Rainsford is initially shown to not show any empathy to the wild animals he hunts. Zaroff is no different, with him declaring, “I hunt the scum of the earth: sailors from tramp ships--lassars, blacks, Chinese, whites, mongrels,” (9). Zaroff hunts humans who have the unfortunate luck to arrive on Ship-Trap Island. Zaroff gives no second thought about hunting humans because he finds them to be the perfect sport to hunt, and finds pleasure in hunting them. After landing on an island through a series of unfortunate events, Rainsford found himself on what he believed was a stranded island. Prior to coming to the island, Rainsford was a man who was civil and was accustomed to the laws of society and principles of sane humans. After seeing signs of human life on the island, he found a general named Zaroff who elegantly told Rainsford that he enjoyed hunting humans and talked in a nonchalant manner as if it was a game to him. Murder is the premeditated killing of one human being by another. Premeditated means think out or plan (an action, especially a crime) beforehand. In regards to the Rainsford vs. Zaroff situation, it is my belief that Rainsford killing General Zaroff, was not justified.
Although, now it seems that Rainsford has adopted General Zaroff's cold attitude toward killing humans, so if Rainsford has changed, it was not to a better person but to a worse. From first no sympathy for animals to no sympathy for men. One way it seems that way is he kills Ivan with no pang of guilt. Some might say that's not murder that's just self-defense. But if that's the case then why does Rainsford after claiming victory and safety from death go to Zaroff's room at night and kills him.
Tanner Toussaint In the short story The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff. One of the reasons why Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff is on the island the only way to live is to hunt or to be the one being hunted. Secondly, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff because Zaroff wanted to die. Lastly, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff because killing Zaroff is going to be the only way Rainsford will escape the island from a psychopath.
General Zaroff is different, to say the least, in Richard Connell’s book, “The Most Dangerous Game.” Rainsford is stranded on a deserted island, or so he thinks. Rainsford comes upon a mansion that is owned by General Zaroff. He knows of Rainsford, who is a renowned author of a book about the hunt, as well as everything and everywhere Rainsford has hunted. General Zaroff is also a hunter, but he goes to the extreme.
Most people when they hear “The Most Dangerous Game” they think of bull riding or other dangerous games that don’t involve death. “The Most Dangerous Game” is a suspenseful cliff hanging story that follows the days of a castaway on the island of a crazed hunter. Rainsford is a big game hunter who falls off a boat near the island of General Zaroff, a big Cossack general who is looking for an alternative to hunting dangerous animals but with a twist. Throughout “The Dangerous Game” Rainsford and General Zaroff both show examples of IRony and exert arrogance.
