There are many texts that address themes that persist through time. Two of them are ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and ‘Animal Farm’. ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is a 16th century play by the playwright William Shakespeare about two tragic lovers, Romeo and Juliet. The play portrays two essential themes that still prevail in everyday life: conflict and fate. Likewise, ‘Animal Farm’ is a short allegory by George Orwell, written in 1943, about the life of farm animals after they rebel against human reign; and what leads to the downfall of it. The novella uses the story of the animals as a metaphor for what happened in the USSR at that time. ‘Animal Farm’ also depicts themes that are still prevalent in the 21st century, such as political organisations in particular. Both texts explore the theme of conflict throughout the story; however, in two distinct ways.
In ‘Romeo and Juliet’, fate is an important ideology as the play is set in the Elizabethan era, when fate was regarded as a powerful force. The story revolves around the idea of fate and how Romeo and Juliet are “star-crossed lovers”. In the play, fate works on different levels. Young people of every era feel the need to prove themselves and to find their own ways in life. Similarly, most communist revolutions followed a similar pattern to what happened in ‘Animal Farm’. Poverty and disadvantaged background make people resent the upper class and lead to a rebellion. The working class then overthrows the aristocracy and the ruling class; leaving a power vacuum in between.
