Hit or Miss “Love is the ultimate law. It won’t adhere to any rules. The most any of us can do is sign on as its accomplice,” is an example of Tom Robbins sagacious view on love. Tom Robbins believes that love has no rules or boundaries, which can lead to unfathomable outcomes just like in the tragedy Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Juliet and Romeo, who come from opposing families, fall in love breaking a cycle of hate. These two star crossed lovers falling into love at first sight shows how unforeseeable love can be. Shakespeare's depiction of Romeo and Juliet’s love in the tragedy indicates that love is unpredictable when least expected; similarly reflected in Tom Robbins' thoughts about how there are no rules that can be obeyed, especially when it comes to love.

After Tybalt and Mercutio's fight where Mercutio ends up dead, Romeo seeks revenge since, “...Mercutio’s soul / Is but a little way above our heads, / Staying for thine to keep him company. / Either thou or I, or both, must go with him”(Shakespeare 3.1.118-125). Killing Tybalt was out of Romeo's usual behavior since his brotherly love for Mercutio makes him seek revenge. Even love that isn’t just romantic can still cause us to do unexpected things. As soon as Romeo dies, Juliet couldn’t bear to live without him as she speaks aloud, “Yea, noise? Then I’ll be brief. O happy dagger, / This is thy sheath. There rust and let me die”(Shakespeare 5.3.182-183). Juliet just as unexpectedly kills herself as a result of Romeo killing himself for her. This situation shows that love can drive us to do unexplainable things for the ones we love and we are unable to stop
