The novel “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare is a play that tells a tale of a tragic love that continuously utilizes those events for the creation of the film “The Titanic”. “Romeo and Juliet” is a play that tells the story of two people that could not live their love due to their parents, so it ends on a tragedy. Romeo and Juliet could not be together because they have an existing dispute among the Montagues and Capulets. “The Titanic” is a movie that narrates the love story of Jack and Rose on a ship. On the course of the movie, their love was completely forbidden by Rose’s family because they were from different classes. The author writes, “Capulet: my child is yet a stranger in the world. She hath not seen the change of fourteen years. Let two more summers with her in their price. Ere we may think her ripe to be a bride.” (Shakespeare, Act 1 Scene 3) This quote means that Lord Capulet, Juliet’s father was talking to Paris and saying that Juliet was going to be a good wife when she turned fourteen years old. In the novel, Juliet was supposed to marry Paris by an arranged marriage. The Titanic has this in common; Rose was supposed to marry Caledon in an organized ceremony. Caledon was an abusive, extremely arrogant and snobby man that thought that women were property and only were necessary for sexual pleasures. The two families from the original Romeo & Juliet, Montagues, and Capulets, were in a long-standing conflict, which was the reason why the two main characters could not be together. The author writes “Two households, both alike in dignity. From ancient grudge break to new mutiny, where civil blood makes civil hands, under”. (Shakespeare, Prologue) In this quote the author mentions that both families will defend their dignity and how civils can end up killing because of their grudge; Romeo and Juliet cannot show their love for each other openly because the Montagues and Capulets were not in good terms. This was due to both households, as said by the author, each was alike in dignity. An example of this is shown when Tybalt, from the Capulet house, murdered Mercutio and Romeo, from the Montague killed Tybalt. The quote also explains that the members of Romeo and Juliet's family cannot be sympathetic with one another. In the Titanic, Rose’s mother banned her to see an inferior class man. Rose and Jack will not be together because they come from different social classes. In addition to this Rose was already engaged with someone she did not love, so meeting Jack was an escape from her controlled life. Rose would never be permitted to marry a lower-class man.
