In the Inaugural Adress from John F. Kennedy he used different figures of speech such as anaphora and zeugma. Meaning he replaced certain words to refrain from repition and also applying words in different order to make different senses of them. In Kennedy’s speech, he uses words such as “Freedom , Poverty and Devotion “ showing on how our country has been through so much to get to where we are now.
In the duration of WW1 and WW2, French speaking Canadians were against being conscripted because they felt that there was no point in Canada fighting European wars. Whereas English speaking Canadians supported conscription, mostly to help out Britain in the battles. There was a choice here to either side with the English and conscript people or to side with the French and not go through with it. Canada went through with conscription. This proved to French Canadians that the Canadian government would support the English population whenever there was any form of a debate.(Legare, 2017, 1).
The Great Depression was one of the most trying times in American History, and the 1932 election held the fate of the country. The American people were in a desperate time and they were looking to the next president for guidance. When it came down to the nominees, the American people had to choose between Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Herbet Hoover. Roosevelt was the obvious choice for the American people, as many people held Hoover personally accountable for the depression, as well as the fact that Hoover’s plan was for excessive government spending rather than actually dealing with the depression (Foner, p. 641). Franklin Delano Roosevelt was perhaps one of the most impactful presidents in the nation’s history, with one of the most anticipated inaugural addresses of the time.
Americans felt heartbroken when their homes were under attack. In the two speeches, both Roosevelt and Bush expressed how they felt and their ideas based on the two attacks on America. Their ideas will be expressed through tone, purpose, and audience. All speeches have a serious tone of some type. Roosevelt's tone was stern and commanding,since he had labeled the attack “a day that will live in infamy.”
The United States experienced many battles and disagreements that have influenced the world in many ways throughout its existence. In these cases, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Lyndon B Johnson are both helping the country through difficult times through the State of the Union addresses. In the first passage, President Roosevelt explains how he believes that America can work together to prevent Japanese imperialism, and in the second passage, Johnson explains how America will fight to prevent communism in Vietnam and acquire peace. They both present their main concerns, what they want to accomplish, and how the people and the country is going to help. Roosevelt’s speech gives basic human rights that he believes every person should be entitled to, whereas Kennedy’s speech he talks more to other nations and about what he pledges to them. Kennedy was giving this speech after winning by a very small margin of votes so he was trying to unite the people of the United States and show he was the correct choice for the president. This speech was given during the Cold War so he was trying to connect the people around the whole world and establish peace. Kennedy was able to unify the people and try to establish peace while at the same time making himself seem like a very competent leader. In his speech Kennedy tries to build his credibility as a personable leader by creating ethos.
Over 100 million people in the world do not have the same basic freedoms that every American has, and over 4 billion people face harsh religious freedoms not allowing them to believe in what they want. During times of conflict in the world the United States and its presidents work to keep the freedoms that we as Americans have. In a time of darkness and fighting in the world, it is hard to remain peaceful. Being the leader of your country, it is hard to say the right thing. His stylistic devices include antithesis, parallelism, and varying structure flows in order to attract attention and to show what his service will accomplish. Kennedy details “a new generation of Americans” by contrasting old and new with his antithesis. Roosevelt both chose history as their distinguished way to convey their hopes for America. However, Roosevelt speech proposes that they needed to unite to protect themselves by protecting others and they should do that by helping without engaging. Likewise Kennedy said that they can do more together than all the harm they could do apart by uniting in peace. People like to stick to what they know and not change.
