The food cultures and practices in Nigeria and Scotland share some similar qualities. In both Nigeria and Scotland food is centered on tradition. Tradition plays a big role; it is what gives food a place in the family home as well as in the town. In Nigeria as shown in the book Things Fall Apart the food culture is centered on what their ancestors did before them and following the traditions of their culture as well as their religion. For example when one goes over to visit their neighbor or when they go to meet their daughters potential suitors family, one always brings and offers a kola nut as a ritual gift. One had to get a good harvest to be able to have enough to eat as well as to have some left over to sell. “Fishing, gathering, and hunting also played important role in their food-sourcing strategies” (Ogundiran, “Four Millennia”). The men in this culture would go out and hunt for food while the women gathered resources. In Things Fall Apart yams were a very big food influence, they controlled everything, how one was looked upon by the town, how well off your family was, or even how much of a man you truly were. The yams are grown and obtained by the men working in the field and then prepared and cooked by the women in the huts to be served to the alpha male first then to the wives in order of marriage, then the children. This food culture shows just how patriarchal this culture is as well as how important of a role food plays in their day-to-day lives.
