In “Bones”, the forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan, also known as Bones, has many similarities to the famous detective Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock Holmes is an intelligent human machine who is detached from society with the exception of his occupation. Although Sherlock Holmes does have a family, he isolates himself from them. In both the books and television shows, Sherlock Holmes is represented as the best of his kind. Not to mention he loves and feeds on the intellect and excitement of a new case. Using this information of Sherlock Holmes, I was able to draw parallels between Sherlock and Temperance Brennan. At the age of fifteen Temperance and her nineteen year old brother were deserted by their parents and left by themselves. Temperance’s brother left her and moved across the country. Although Sherlock had a family, they were quite distant from each other, so Sherlock was essentially alone in the world like Brennan. Away from family relations, Temperance Brennan was indeed one of a kind in her field. In the very first episode, Brennan states that there are only three people in the world that are like her, but none are working for the FBI. Like Brennan, Sherlock Holmes has other people with the same type of intellect, however none of which fight crime. In the period of Sherlock Holmes, women only played the role of the housewife in society. In Bones, a 21st century television show, Temperance Brennan, a woman, is equally important as her partner, Agent Seeley Booth, a man, in murder investigations, thus showing a contrast from men being more dominant, in Sherlock’s time, to women and men being
