Sherman Alexie convinces his audience that an education is crucial to being successful by using personal anecdotes to captivate and create a connection with his audience and repetition to reiterate the importance of having an education. Alexie's use of personal anecdotes fortifies the impact he has on his audience.
Although, they have similarity, the two stories has major differences also. First, both author differs the way they introduce and develop their lead characters to the reader. Second, they also differ in perspective from which their stories are being told. Third, they differs on the choice of settings and how it impact to the stories.
Literary Analysis: “A Worn Path” Eudora Welty uses many literary elements in her short story, “A Worn Path,” to allow the reader to stay engaged throughout its entirety. Although there are many literary elements present in this story, there are three that Welty focuses intently on. She uses elements such as imagery, symbolism, and motifs to draw the reader’s attention. It is important for an author to write their story in a way that can be understood but also enjoyed. In “A Worn Path”, Welty focuses in on the elements, such as, symbolism, motifs, and imagery and writes a story that has great meaning and can be discovered by the reader when looked at carefully.
The Fall of the House of Usher composed by Edgar Allan Poe and A Rose for Emily made by William Faulkner are very similar considering they both come from the gothic spectrum of short stories. However, they are very different and of course they’d be different since if you’d look at their authors they come from two different backgrounds of life. Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, so he’d have a different perspective of life since William Faulkner was born in Mississippi they’d have been taught different yet similar values of life. Edgar was born way earlier than William, so he might’ve believed things that were fake and in William’s time everyone knew that thing was a lie. Box Theory: the theory of roles Who are we to decide who we are in society, more often than not society chooses who we are and others accept it as truth. Some would say that everybody is like a box and we have a certain place we fit into in the world, but then one question remains. Can we escape from the place society gives us or are we stuck in your place forever? In the short story “Breaking and Entering”, Sherman Alexie creates a sense of tension through his use of stereotypes, to suggest that society has a limited set of expectations and goals for individuals depending on their race.
Symbolism is used differently in both works, nevertheless symbolism is an important part in the two texts. Shirley Jackson uses dialogue throughout the story to provide the background information to inform the readers what's going on. Without this craft move the problem of the story would be hard to recognize. Suzanne Collins uses dramatic irony to provide the readers background information. Despite the negative stereotype of American Indians, the objections and disapproval of fellow Natives, and the criticism of others, Sherman Alexie went on to become a successful writer that has inspired many. Alexie overcame many obstacles that would have deterred him from his goal, but he was able to remain steadfast and continue on in his pursuit of writing. As a result, he has published many literary works that include several short stories, poems, and a variety of novels. He allows his culture to seep into his writing, and continues to inspire young American Indians who also desire the path of knowledge.
