In medieval times, Knights followed the code of chivalry, which describes the different qualities that an excellent knight must have, and followed. In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the Green knight offer a game to the Knights of the Round Table to challenge the different qualities of the knights. By accepting the Green Knight’s game Sir Gawain demonstrates the qualities of a perfect knight by showing courage, courtesy, and honesty.
The first quality that Sir Gawain demonstrate in the poem is courage. Sir Gawain showed courage when he volunteer to take King Arthur place in the Green Knight game. “Then Gawain… made to the king a sign “I beseech you, sire.”... “Let this game be mine” “Now if you, my worthy Lord... would command me to step from the dais and stand with you there I’d be deeply honored to advise you before all the court” Ln 117-124. The first time that Sir Gawain showed courtesy is when he ask the Queen consent to get up from the table to take King Arthur place in the Green Knight game. Sir Gawain tells King Arthur that he wants the game to be him and “without bad manners move down from my place (Though I couldn't, of course, If my liege lady disliked it” Ln 123-124. The second time Sir Gawain demonstrate courtesy is when he promise to the Lady of the castle to become his Knight after he finishes his quest of finding the green chapel. “In know your worth and price, and my debt’s by no mean slight; I swear through fire and ice to be your humble knight.” Ln 214-217. After the Lady of the castle gives him the green sash and tells Sir Gawain that nobody could hurt him if he wear he felt the responsibility to become her
