1535 Words7 Pages

Films and plays are constantly intertwined, many times there are adaptions of one another, and often there is a modern film version of an older play. The film 10 Things I Hate About You is said to be based on William Shakespeare’s play Taming of the Shrew, and there have been many film versions of West Side Story, originally a musical by Arthur Laurents. It is common for movie directors to use characters from plays and musicals to create a loose structure for the film while modernizing the plot and overall theme of the film. In Moliere’s play, The Bourgeois Gentleman, and Angés Jaoui’s film, Le Goût des Autres, characters Manie and Nicole are presented as side characters whose personalities and actions have both similarities and differences. …show more content…

“MONSIEUR JOURDAIN: Stupid girl. What’s she snickering for?/NICOLE: Ha ha ha – the way you’re dolled up – ha ha ha!/MONSIEUR JOURDAIN: So?/NICOLE: Oh save me, it hurts…ha ha ha ha ha…!/MONSIEUR JOURDAIN: The minx! An example of this is when Castella is robbed outside of Manie’s house, she is not hesitant to allow him into her house and help clean him up. She helped him with his wounds and while they were talking she slipped up and almost mentioned that the group of people he had been trying to befriend did not truly like him. Instead of following through with the statement and telling him the truth, she decided to just tell him no worries because she did not want to cause him more stress or hurt his feelings at all. Additionally, Castella shaved off his mustache because Clara said that she preferred guys without mustaches, and no one noticed at all except for Manie who said something when she was taking care of him. She was the first person to notice that he shaved it and that made him feel seen, especially because Clara did not say anything and he had done it for her. The immediate assumption of Manie’s character might be of someone who does not take life seriously, sells weed, and bartends all the time. But a true analysis would conclude that she is one of the most heartfelt and accepting characters of
