Cole Osness Dr. Animashaun English 218 May 9th, 2024 Concerning “The American Dream” and “The House on Mango Street” In The House on Mango Street, Sandra Cisnero takes us on a transcending journey into the lives of Esperanza and her neighbors which mirrors the complexities of the American dream. Esperanza, the 12-year-old girl who is the main character of The House on Mango Street. We follow her story as she continues to grow older and experience the difficulties that are associated with aging. Additionally, we added that the American dream is often synonymous with success and it’s abundance in the United States. The imagery of the American dream makes it seem almost too easy for immigrants to have success upon their arrival in the United States. Immigrants must climb their way up the “Ladder of Success” through hard work and perseverance. The “Ladder of Success” was another idea that was mentioned during our lecture. It possesses several labeled rungs (Education, Jobs, Capital, Political Power) and one unlabeled rung at the bottom of the ladder. The bottom rung is where immigrants most often begin their journey (Typically long hours and low pay). Additionally, the bottom rung is the entry-level, and it is unlabeled because it looks different for everyone. Meanwhile, the labeled rungs resemble checkpoints for individuals trying to gain a higher socioeconomic status. It is important to note that not everyone’s path will look like the “Ladder of Success”, and unfortunately, some people are unable to climb above the first level of the ladder.
