In a matter of seconds man can change the nature of their actions. In the books The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury the characters deal with the opposing forces that are naturally a part of the society they live in. The main character Liesel in The Book Thief and the main character Guy Montag in Fahrenheit 451 struggle with the oppression of compromising their moral values. The opposing forces suggest that the nature of man is inherently good however it can be corrupted in the matter of minutes by outside influences. Humans are born with no knowledge of the outside world. As people grow up they learn to know what their moral values are. Both Liesel and Montag know people who had their lives affected by brutality, ignorance and cruelty. Liesel lived during Hitler’s rule meaning that a majority of the people living in Germany were against the Jewish religion. Although Liesel lived through this misery she never let it bring her down. At a family gathering, Hans and Rosa’s son, Hans Hubermann Jr., started to get angry that Liesel was reading a book that was not Hitler's book Mein Kampf. Hans Jr. asked in a bad tone “‘What trash is this girl reading? She should be reading Mein Kampf’” (Zusak 105). Hans Jr. was a big supporter of the Nazi party and was always against his father for doing the right thing and being kind. Hans Jr. did not just stop at yelling at Liesel for reading something that will actually give her knowledge and power, he continued to yell at his father over how he is pathetic, and can stand by and not do anything while his nation is “cleaning out the garbage.” After this everyone was scared of what he was saying. Hans Jr. tried to use scare tactics to change his mind of his family. Although they all knew that what Hans Jr. stood for was wrong they still were scared that he could corrupt their values. Corruption of the government happens all of the time and without even realizing it Montag had so many people in his life change because of it. Although Montag became enlightened and less ignorant he still had people in his life that were bad for his values. His wife Millie was so unaware of what she was doing or remembering anything that has happened to her. She was obsessed with her TV which was all controlled by the government. This made her become more and more involved with being corrupted. One night Millie took all of her pills and overdosed. Montag became very scared and worried, because this was something she would have never done. The next day when Montag confronted Millie, she replied “‘I
