Both of these stories may have the same message but how they convey that message is different and you can see it throughout their personality traits. The personalities of Tom Walker and Jabez Stone are completely different. This is shown throughout both stories in various different ways.“He even felt some gratitude towards the black woodman, who, he considered, had done him a kindness.” (Irving 320). This is showing that Tom Walker doesn’t value his wife at all. He doesn’t just not value his life, he wishes for the worst to happen to her and is happy about it. After he realizes his wife is dead he laughs about it. Other than that he has no real connections to other people besides his wife. This shows that he doesn’t value his family and is isolated from people around him. His relationship with his wife is abusive and isolating which leads to him making a deal with the devil. On the other hand Jabez Stone has a very different relationship with his wife. “Hurry after them- back to the village- back to your folks. Mr.Webster will take you- you’ll be safe with Mr.Webster.” (421 Benet) In this quote you can see that Jabez would sacrifice himself to keep Mary safe. This emphasizes the love he has for his wife and what he would do for her. But, because of this love he ends up feeling pressure to take them out of the situation they were in.
