In The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare and Ten things I hate about you ran by Gil Junger they both interpret and reflect the society and class of when each text was put together. When linking these two texts and looking at the themes it undeniable that there are similarities and differences of the context throughout these times. To begin with, The Taming of the Shrew proposes that money seems to be a very important requirement during this period. It is the suitors who pursues the relationship with a certain women and has a view of marriage in the picture. Bianca and Katherine in Taming of the Shrew are seen to be “treasures” by their suitors. As an alternative, in 10 things I hate about you it is evident from costumes and music that Kat does not shadow the traditional female role. Combining with her “angry girl music” she finds herself in a classroom saying: “oppressive patriarchal values which dictate our education.” Kat is talking about gender roles mainly males and the way she feels about her father. Kat has really strong opinions and values and no one could change what she is passionate for. The play is about women and the struggle they had to yearn for equality. The main connection between the two texts is how the modern society advanced from the Elizabethan era. A difference between these two texts is the way the men tame the women. In the play Petruchio is mean and aggressive towards Katherine. He staves her and takes away her sleep. Whereas Patrick falls in love with Kat and is extremely nice to her and tries to make it up to her by buying her a guitar. Both of these techniques worked though Petruchios would not be acceptable is today’s
