Martin ¨In fact, for the first time in American history, the majority of parents do not think that their kids will be better off than they were. This is true of rich and poor, men and women.¨ This means that American citizens in modern times do not believe that their children or the next generation will be more financially stable than themselves, regardless of their income status. The country was also in the midst of an economic boom, which fueled the belief that anyone could "strike it rich" on Wall Street. “However, this rapid economic growth was built on a bubble which popped in 1929. The Great Gatsby was published in 1925, well before the crash, but through its wry descriptions of the ultra-wealthy, it seems to somehow predict that the fantastic wealth on display in 1920s New York was just as ephemeral as one of Gatsby's parties. Young adults, aged 18 to 34, are most likely to feel the dream is unattainable, with 63% saying it's impossible. This age group has suffered in the wake of the Great Recession, finding it hard to get good jobs”. This evidence means that young adults feel as if the American Dream is nearly impossible to attain or achieve in the modern economy.
