The genocides of the Holocaust and Assyrian genocide share many similarities and differences throughout the eight stages of genocide. In both genocides lives were lost because of the actions of those who thought they were superior. The eight stages of genocide start at classification of the group to be exterminated and end at denying the genocide ever happened. The first stage is classification. Jews were classified as being inferior and a hindrance to the German race (United States Holocaust Museum). The Assyrians were classified as being Christians and in the Islamic faith these religions were to be exterminated Ex: Jihad. The Jewish Holocaust saw this by hate propaganda which “encouraged passivity and acceptance of the impending measures against Jews, as these appeared to depict the Nazi government as stepping in and restoring order.” (United States Holocaust Museum). Polarization in both groups was evident but the Holocaust’s polarization is more evident and can be found more available than the Assyrian genocide which does not have that much evidence towards polarization. Next, is the preparation for the extermination of the Holocaust and Assyrian genocide. The Holocaust preparation is herding the Jews into concentration camps and making them work inside these concentration camps. The Holocaust had hundreds of these camps spread over Europe. The Assyrian preparation was to “Declare jihad or a holy war against all Christian minorities in the Ottoman Empire on Nov. 14, 1914 in all of the Ottoman mosques.” The Assyrians also have faced attacks from the Islamic state before their mass extermination. The preparation for the Holocaust was more organized and planned but the Assyrian genocide did not have much planning except for jihad being
