Edgar Allan Poe was a writer that is known for his gothic style of writing. Poe’s short stories and poems are very popular. His work is intriguing, but also brings up questions about life itself. He uses the theme of death in a lot of his work, which is probably because of the death of his mother. He also uses color to symbolize things throughout his writings. In both “The Masque of the Red Death” and “The Raven, he uses death and color to express his ideas.
In Edgar Allan Poe’s short story, "The Masque of the Red Death," and the poem, "The Raven," he uses color and themes of death to show imagery and symbolism. “The Masque of the Red Death” relates to death and a disease called the Red Death killing people one by one. The prince in the story tries to cheat death and escape the plague of the country, but fails. “The Raven” also relates to death; throughout the story, the man begs a raven to let him have the ability to see Lenore, his late wife. The color black was used to symbolize evil and fear and the color red represented blood and death. In “The Raven”, the narrator is trying to get over the death of his loving Lenore. The appearance of the bird and the way in which he puts doubts into his own mind shows that the narrator will not easily get over the loss of Lenore. Poe describes the bird as being an ebony color. This bird represented death and caused fear in the main character. The main character said, “Prophet, said I. Thing of evil - prophet still. If bird or devil!”. The Raven is clearly an evil presence.
