At first glance it is strange to consider that the sci-fi hit, The Matrix, has similarities to the philosophic works of both Plato and René Descartes. In fact, the ideas behind the plot of The Matrix is found in both Plato’s The Allegory of the Cave and Descartes’ Meditations on First Philosophy (or Meditation I). All three works are centered on the idea of an illusionary state of reality. All three works approach the idea with a slight degree of difference, however at the core there is the same idea. Looking first at Plato’s The Allegory of the Cave, one finds the idea of an illusion of reality.
