After viewing the in class video clip on the Allegory of the Cave and watching the movie, The Matrix, I quickly noticed a similar relationship between the two. Both the Allegory of the Cave and The Matrix revolve around the question, “what is real?” The Allegory of the Cave is explained as prisoners chained up and facing a wall. All the prisoners can see is the wall. Behind them is a fire and a raised walkway where each day, many animals and people walk on. Their shapes show up on the wall in front of the prisoners and they think that the shadows they see are not real. However, if a prisoner was released into the outside world, experienced outside reality and came back to share the reality with chained prisoners, they wouldn’t understand his echo in the cave and they would only see the shadow, not knowing it was a real person. Neo is told that a man named Morpheus can explain the meaning to him. The only catch was if Morpheus shows Neo “the matrix”, Neo could never escape it. Once Neo agrees to escape to “the matrix”, he wakes up in a pod covered in slimy goop, with plugs and cords running through and exiting his body and looks around to see billions of these pods he woke up in. In the movie, Neo is told that humans in the 21st century rebelled against the machines they created and when humans blocked the machines access to solar energy, the machines then turned on the humans and started operating on the human’s electricity then simulating a machine run
