The Truman Show and Fahrenheit 451 Essay
Being excluded from your society is something that happens more often than not. It is whether you want to be ignorant and face the situations or intelligent and change the society you live in. We can see the same type of growth from ignorance to intelligence represented in two different fictional characters. Truman Burbank from The Truman Show and Guy Montag from Fahrenheit 451, both characters being excluded from their societies without even knowing it. Truman Burbank is a 30-year-old man who lives in a world where every aspect of his life is being show to a global audience as a reality television show. On the other hand, Guy Montag is a firefighter from a dystopian society where books are illegal

Truman is completely unaware of the fact that he lives in a false reality and his whole life is being manipulated solely for the purpose of television. He is even confronted by a friend named Sylvia who warns him about his life, telling him that everything that seemed real was a lie. Even with strange interactions Truman still cannot come realize that the world he lives in is fake. The same type of ignorance is represented in Montag who is ignorant of the effect that his actions create. Montag burns books every day, enjoying it even stating that “it was a pleasure to burn”. Truman is ignorant until he finally succumbs to the presence of the world he is living in. Truman thinks he is living a typical life, but when eccentric events continue to occur it raises suspicion and furthers Truman’s desire to seek knowledge about his surroundings. Incidents such as a mysterious light falling from the sky or Truman seeing a homeless man resembling his father, who has leads him to question all the things he knew about his life. For Montag he is ignorant about the world he lives in until he meets a girl named Clarisse, meeting her starts to change him. Her curiosity and questioning is so unique Montag becomes flabbergasted at Clarisse’s way of thinking. He had never met anyone who though for themselves and asked why instead of how. When Clarisse asks Montag the simple questions like “are you in love?” and “are you happy?”, Montag becomes uncomfortable as he should answer yes immediately, he begins to think about these things and ask himself is he truly in love and happy. Clarisse acts as a devil’s advocate for the society Montag lives in and get him to think more about the world he lives
