The Truman Show and Fahrenheit 451 are very similar in that the main characters deal with many similar conflict. One conflict that is similar is that both lives are controlled . His “creator”, Christof controls what happens to him at any given moment. Christof also controls what the people who watch think and see. He makes them believe that Truman wants this lifestyle and could have gotten our of this life if he wanted to, which is not true. In Fahrenheit 451, the government controls what everyone thinks, does watches, learns, and more. People in their society aren’t supposed to think or read. Reading is so horrible, that the firemen burn the books if they catch you having or reading one. They burn all of your possessions in an instant. The …show more content…

An example of this is in the Truman show when Truman starts to talk about going to atlantic city, but his wife dismisses it trying to get him to stay, “‘What about Atlantic City?’ ‘Oh, no. You hate to gamble.’ ‘That's right, I do - don't I?’ ‘So why would you want to go there?’ ‘Because I never have! That's why people go places, isn't it’” (Weir scene 23)? Marlon tells Truman that he has traveled everywhere but there is no reason to go, because Seahaven Island is the best place on Earth. Meanwhile, Meryl tries to talk Truman out of every place he considers going because of something he might not like about it. She is trying to discourage him from leaving the dome, because if he does this then she loses her paycheck along with the rest of the actors on the set. The actors will do anything to try to prevent him from breaking free from the made up society that Truman was raised up in. However, by this time, Truman is trying to break out of Seahaven Island because comfort is less important to him than having a new experience. Another example of wanting to break free from society is when Montag is starting to try and find ways to “keep books alive”. This is the catch to having a Utopian society, it is too good to be true. There will always be poverty, there will always be violence. This can be seen also be seen in Fahrenheit 451. Although, to most living under this Utopian society, it seems like everything is perfect and that everyone is happy, no one is able to think for themselves, even to the extent that they are overdosing on pills and staring at a screen all day watching what ever the government airs on the TV. Another problem with the Utopian society set up in Fahrenheit 451 is the fact that they are constantly going into war with other countries. In conclusion The Truman show and Fahrenheit 451are both representing a Utopian society, and as can be seen the risks outweigh the rewards if they were to be like the examples it can be seen in both the book and
