Published in 1960, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is seen as a book embedded into the American public school education system with good reasons. To Kill a Mockingbird symbolizes innocence, classism, and racism. We look through all of these statements from an 8 year old girl nicknamed Scout as she grows up during the Great Deppression, When Scout was around 7 years old, a trial shook the little town of Maycomb when a 19 year old girl accused a black man named Tom Robinson of raping her. Being set in the 1930’s when segregation was a prominent factor in America, With little evidence and witnesses Tom Robinson was still found guilty and was sentenced to death by electrocution.
Leading up to the Civil Rights Movement, the black community was in a constant battle against law enforcement treating them unfair compared to the white community. The Scottsboro Boys and Emmett Till’s cases were one of the many times that the legal system showed to be unfair to blacks. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, the law enforcement and community were very racist against blacks and believed all blacks were criminals. In the story, Atticus Finch, who is a lawyer gets put into a very difficult situation and decides to defend a black man, who went by the name of Tom Robinson.
Harper lee creates a trial similar to the Scottsboro trial in her book To Kill a Mockingbird. Lee was a kid when the trial became popular so it would make sense to mimic the trial. It could have been a way to express her opinion on the unfairness of the trial. Mayella Ewells is similar to Ruby Bates because they both violated the social principle of segregation. Mayella Ewells tempted Tom Robinson by kissing him “She reached up an’ kissed me” Robinson told Atticus Finch when giving his testimony.
In the south back in the 1930’s there were many Americans who did not know the meaning of equality for all. With this being the case, many black people faced discrimination daily and it followed through to the legal systems especially in the south where both being compared took place. The evidence provided in both trials proved to be weak. Despite this, both defendants had determined lawyers who believed in justice.
Both were similar in that they were dealing with racial segregation in what is termed the deep southern states. So their environments were similar. but different in perspectives. one being a child and the other a man. Scout was raised to be open minded in an environment that nurtured her in the belief that all people were equal regardless of race or class.
This essay will be about two injustices the Scottsboro trial and Tom Robinson’s trial. A few similarities are that they were treated unfairly and they were all accused of a repulsive crime, raping a white woman. In the Scottsboro trial though, two women were supposedly raped. Both trials happened in the same time period, while also noting that the women in both trials came from poor backgrounds. Atticus gave his all to his case while the nine young men’s lawyer also tried his best.
The forefathers of the United States built this country on the ideals of freedom and equality for all people. Unfortunately, the fight for equality and freedom did not end with the revolutionary war. The fight has continued throughout the decades. Many of these issues were fought in the courtroom. Auburn University created an online Alabama Encyclopedia, there, the following quote stated, “Scottsboro became an international cause celebre that dramatically encapsulated the American south troubled post reconstruction history of legal and extralegal racial violence, the social and political upheaval of the great depression, and the lingering cultural divide between the north and south.”
“We, as human beings must be willing to accept people different from ourselves” This quote can relate to two passages, To Kill A Mockingbird and “Only the Innocent were Accused”. In both of these passages an issue with racism occurs and the black(s) are accused of rape. People in Maycomb (TKAM) and in Jackson County Alabama (OTAWI) did not accept the, what they call, “negroes” at all and were unfair in many ways. People such as Atticus and the Communists defended these “negroes” who were accused of rape. In To Kill A Mockingbird, a man named Tom Robinson was accused of raping a white woman and in “Only the Innocent were Accused”, a group of 9 boys called “Scottsboro boys” were accused of raping two white woman.
Scottsboro Argumentative Essay: Rough Draft Crimes happen everyday. Many criminals are incarcerated for their actions. Everyone has a different opinion on certain topics, everyone is entitled to their opinion as long as they know the true facts behind it. During the Scottsboro cases in the 1930’s, there were more people who thought of the accused to be guilty than innocent because of the unjust racism that had become a popular concept. Olen Montgomery was not guilty of raping 2 women.
The first similarity between two books is the display of morality and ethics. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus is assigned by Judge Taylor to defend Tom Robinson in trial. Atticus chooses to defend Tom Robinson honorably, despite the color of his skin and the alternate opinions from most of the people of Maycomb. When Scout asks Atticus why he is defending Tom Robinson, Atticus explains to Scout that is the right thing to do, and that he couldn’t live with himself if he didn’t give Tom Robinson a fair trial.
Injustice The Scottsboro Case shed light on the racial practices expressed in law that made a great impact on the legal system today. The actual victims of the Case did not receive a fair trial due to the color of their skin. The ones who played the victims planned the crime, and their stories made no sense. But like many of the trials during the time it wasn’t based on the actual evidence that was found,or even the defendants ' stories.
“That trial is not fair where affection is judge. ”- Thomas Fuller. At a time when the country was divided between the judgement of a person’s skin color and justice. In 1931 The Scottsboro Trial was an underrated in American history.

In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, there are many similarities between the narrator, Scout, and the author, Harper Lee. For instance, both grew up in the time of the great depression with little money to do extra things; therefore, they relied on their imaginations to entertain them for hours (Haggerty) . Comparatively, both were tomboys in their youths and grew up in small towns where girls were expected to wear dresses and act like a lady. Also, both Harper Lee and Scout both grew up with their fathers being lawyers for their town and would often hear of cases that they worked on (“Harper Lee”) . Similarly, when writing her book a “mad dog warning” was released, no doubt giving the idea for the episode of the mad dog Tim Robinson.
