In To Kill a Mockingbird by harper Lee, despite of him having a public trial, Tom Robinson, an innocent man was proven guilty, also his trial that was completely and utterly unfair, one-sided, and even discriminatory. This novel takes place in Maycomb, Alabama, a made up town. Robinson was working for the Ewell’s and one day Tom was invited into the house to fix a door. Tom Robinson was accused of raping and abusing a white woman, Mayella Ewell, when her father is the one who abused her. The jury had a lack of evidence to prove that Tom was guilty, and also ignored the evidence that proves his innocence.

The Mistreatment of Tom Robinson Tom Robinson was a falsy accused man, all because of the community's biased opinion. The reason why she didn 't tell the truth at her first trial was because, Mayella was afraid of being embarrassed because she kissed a black male. Mayella is the daughter of Bob Ewell and they have one of the messiest home lives in the town.
The Law came to protect the whites from the blacks, so the blacks were obligate to use different restrooms away from the white, do not sit on the same chairs with whites , a white female nurses cannot attend to black males patient. Beside this there was a fear of interracial marriage so it was prohibited. The other unrealistic fear that African American males would rape and impregnate white women as a way of rebelling against the law, to reduce the white man pride, and the white man power, to release their wrath by this way. Harper Lee emphasizes this in the novel, the whole idea of raping Mayella Ewell, and the suppressed anger of Tom Robinson and that he could not defend himself, the Blacks were just in the corner supporting him silently, while the white man used his power to oppress the blacks even more. Tom’s Trial was inspired by the Scottsboro Trials of 1931; two white women accused nine black males of raping them.
