The movie I chose that has drawn on some of the themes from the Odyssey is Iron Man. In many ways, Tony Stark is exactly like Odysseus. They are both wealthy, and extremely cunning. Stark is the CEO of his own company and is a very good businessman. He creates multiple inventions, such as the suit for Iron Man, and knows how to get out of any sticky situation. Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, is known for being cunning and able to think his way out of situations. For example, it was his idea to create the Trojan Horse in the battle against the Trojans. When terrorists catch Stark he is forced to use his skills against his will which I compared to Odysseus going unwillingly to war against the Trojans. They both fight dirty and can be known for being a jerk. Stark does not have a very good relationship with other superheroes, which can be compared to Odysseus being the opposite of many other Greek Heroes. Both women have to deal with the fact that the man they love might not return home. Penelope is Odysseus’ wife who is left behind to run the household. She is very loyal to her husband and never lets her love waiver. She proves to be sly and creative when she prolongs her marriage to suitors by saying she could not marry until she was finished making a shroud for Laertes. Little did the suitors know that at night she would undo her work so she would never have to marry them. Pepper Potts is also very clever and extremely patient. She stays by Stark’s side no matter how he treats her or how much danger he is in. She is Stark’s love interest and one of his reasons for staying alive. Both of these women are extremely strong characters in both story
