During the 1830s, an intellectual movement took place called Transcendentalism. Transcendentalism is the idea that an individual is the center of the universe and is more powerful than any institution. This way of thinking was very new to the people during that time. Even though the movement took place well over one hundred years ago, traits of Transcendentalism are still abundant in society today. For example, the movie Wall-E contains many traits of Transcendentalism.

Dead Poets Society Transcendentalism is about life in which nature and the soul connect. In the movie Dead Poet Society, one of the characters who shows transcendentalism in Neil Perry. In the movie the students quoted poems and had their alone time with nature. They also relied on themselves and sought the spiritual side of things.

Transcendentalism is one of the most influential fundamentals of man-kind. This transition away from the church also brought a new dynamic to relationships, since people began to make choices for themselves instead of for their spouse. This shift from a "communal" society to an "individual" society first began when small minorities (in different churches) tried to bring down the orthodox majorities. When they did not succeed, they would leave the church and attempt to bring down orthodox thought, elsewhere. Once these minorities gained allies, they were strong enough to degrade the traditional ideas of social order and deference (human submission), as well as try to un-popularize established church governments. The revivalists also supported the rights of minorities, and they came out with novel ideas about society and how it should be run.
Transcendentalism is a belief in a higher reality, knowledge, and an experience that is only achieved by humans. Also, it suggests that every individual is capable of discovering their higher truth. One way to figure this is by non-conformity which means that they fail or refuse to follow the rules as while as with established customs, attitudes or ideas.
