Two of my favorite books I've read this semester are Underneath The Sycamore Tree by B. Celeste and A Thousand boy kisses by Tille Cole. Both these books explore the lives of two different girls who have different sicknesses. These two books explore many themes and moods using a variety of literary devices. Both these books show a struggle with the news of their sickness, living with it and trying to overcome it. In the novel Underneath The Sycamore Tree, by B. Celeste, The Story of Emery Matterson, an 18-year-old Girl, is told. Emery is confronting her own reality at a time when girls her age are often starting to think about life after high school and moving into adulthood with hopes and dreams just waiting to come true. The plot of this book is the story of a young couple who fall in love. When Poppy was just a young child, her dying grandma gave her a jar filled with 1,000 tiny pieces of paper and instructed her to record the best kisses of her life on the paper. Only a few weeks later, the first of these numerous kisses starts with a mysterious Norwegian boy named Rune. They gradually fall in love with one another and reach the peak of one another's lives. As Rune is forced to go to Oslo with the rest of his family, Poppy finally stops writing to him, so obviously this fairytale cannot last forever. In an effort to move on from his broken heart, Rune resorts to risky coping mechanisms. A few years later, he returns to Georgia and makes an effort to win back Poppy's love, but what occurred while they were apart has an impact on their relationship for all time. Tillie Cole used many different literary devices like monologue which is demonstrated in quotes like “This isn’t the end. It’s just a little pause in our lives. And I’ll be watching over you, every single day. I’ll be in your heart. I’ll be in the blossom grove that we love so much, in the sun and the wind.” (Cole #) said by poppy. Imagery shown by words like (find quote) (Cole #), and foreshadowing by quotes like this “This isn’t the end. It’s just a little pause in our lives. And I’ll be watching over you, every single day. I’ll be in your heart. I’ll be in the …show more content…
Both of these books show great determination and strength. While Poppy’s illness was not as severe as Emery’s and did not cause her nearly as much pain or suffering, she went through her own kind. Both these books deal with young women who are unfortunately diagnosed with an incurable disease or illness. Both Poppy and Emery want to make the most out of the little time they have left and achieve their goals. While the authors make Emery’s and Poppy’s point of views on the world polar opposites they both go through pain and suffering everyday to persevere and try as hard as they can to live a normal teenage life. As much as it may hurt they both wanted the pain and happiness of loving someone. Both of the boys who were lucky enough to be loved by these girls did everything in their power to help them complete their goal. Poppy’s by filling her one thousand boy kisses jar, and Emery’s by helping her have as normal of a sophomore year as she could. These books tell two completely different stories of two different lives, people, and sicknesses. Yet they are both very similar in many ways, some obvious and some
