Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson use similar and different poetic devices. They were different and similar in their topics in the poems, “324” and “When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer”. They both talk about different and similar things and both come from the same era of writing which is the Romantic era. First when you read “324” by Emily Dickinson you can see that she has a rhyme scheme in the endings of each lines.

In Whitman’s poems, he likes to have a more empathic view of individuals and their ways of living. For example, in Whitman’s “Song of Myself”, the poet talks about not just of himself, but all human beings, and of how mankind works into the world and the life of it. Even though the poem mostly talks about life and the happiness of it, Whitman describes also that life itself has its ending, and that is the theme of death. For Dickinson, she is the complete opposite of happiness.
Although Langston, Angela, and Walt had their similarities, the three also have many differences. The three poets Langston, Angela, and Walt were all have similar traits and styles of poetry. They are similar because They wrote poems based off of their own views. For example in Angela de Hoyos To Walt Whitman poem in line 9 she stated “big enough for my people” which told Walt Whitman how she felt about her race not being included in his poem.

Walt Whitman was born in 1819, and at the age of 11 was deprived of a normal childhood education because his father wanted to recapture the families lost glory. The Whitman’s were once a wealthy family, owning a good deal of farmland in the New York state’s long island (Walt Whitman Biography, n.d.). Similarly, Emily Dickinson would finish most of her childhood education, attending two different academies for a total of eight years (Emily Dickinson Biography, n.d.).
Her purpose was understood, but not well-received since I could not connect with her personally. They both had something profound to say, but Whitman’s friendly voice was received with more ease. Two poets can try to convey similar themes but, the distance between the poet and the reader can influence how the reader receives the information. In conclusion, two very intelligent authors can be grounded in the same belief, but have similarities and differences.
Although there are many differences between these two gifted authors, similarities can be discovered as well. The background of Walt Whitman is enormously different from that of Emily Dickinson. Because Walt Whitman was such an under privileged kid and rose from his struggle in avery romantic life style, we see this slight bit of romanticism in his writing, like when he says, “ But O heart! heart! heart!/O the bleeding drops of red,/Where on the deck my Captain lies,/Fallen cold and dead” (Whitman).

She wrote poems while she was isolated in her room that described what nature, love, and death would be. She has influenced many other writers of poetry, since hers have such a deep meaning behind them. Several of her poems can be explained from a personal point of view, which is incredible in poetry. A poet’s goal is to get the reader to think and feel emotions towards the poem they have written, and apparently, Emily has done a great job at doing that. This thesis will be dealing with the life and work of two most prominent women writers of the 19th and 20th century, Emily Dickinson and Sylvia Plath. For better understanding of complex topics their work reflects, I will describe important events from their biographies. Although Dickinson and Plath lived in two different centuries they were connected by a common thread, the position of women in the male-dominated world. Not only that they wanted for women to have the same rights as men, but also to be free from the roles of housewives and mothers which were imposed on them by a conservative society. They fought for these rights in only way they could, by writing.
