“All war is a symptom of man's failure to as a thinking mammal” (John Steinbeck) War to society was seen as good thing. Something that would solve all conflict in the world but undoubtedly caused the death of millions. Through certain texts we can ‘Dulce Decorum Est’ written by Wilfred Owen, ‘American sniper’ Directed by Clint Eastwood, ‘Saving Private Ryan’ directed by Steven Spielberg and finally ‘Hacksaw Ridge’ directed by Mel Gibson are all texts that talk about man’s inhumanity to man. More specifically about the trauma and subsequent cruelty war brings.

Owen wrote dulce decorum est while in the middle of death itself and surrounded by hatred and grim lifestyles. He has exposed the real trauma of the war; he explains this through “To children ardent for some desperate glory, the old lie; Dulce et Decorum est”. He uses this quote to antagonise the viewer to think about the children who are craving fame due to propaganda surrounding war with glamorised realities portrayed by governments. Present society saw death as cowardice and not honourable. Suicides during and after the war are due to the trauma of war. i. The poem ‘Suicide in the Trenches’ made me think about the mental status and stability of our society. In ‘The Great War’ the idea of Shell Shock or more modernly known as PTSD was mindlessly ignored. All counterparts of war should've acknowledged it. In modern society PTSD is a known problem in war survivors and people who have fought for our country, we have treatment options available for such situations were as in ‘The Great War’ it was deemed unnecessary by the government. Has made me reflect on mental trauma and depression in our society.
