Two plus two equals four. This definitive statement is common sense in our own day and age, but in George Orwell’s classic dystopian novel “1984”, the citizens have lost the freedom to just know something is true through cognitive reason. There are those citizens, however, who are conscious of the oppression they suffer. The characters Winston Smith and Julia are definitive examples of these apperceptive individuals. Winston and Julia both share negative opinions of the party but they philosophize quite differently about how to rebel. Winston and Julia both believe that the Party is oppressive and unjust. To begin, when Julia and Winston first met in the forest clearing, Julia explained her theory that “If you kept the small rules, you could break the big ones”(129). Julia believes that rebellion should be an occasional, personal rejection of Party values. Her thoughts are that no full scale rebellion could ever take place to overthrow the Party. Continuing, in multiple sections of the novel Winston states that “If there is hope, it lies with the proles”(69). Winston believes that a complete revolution is possible if the proletariat class rises up against the party. This is in direct contradiction with Julia’s prediction which shows that they have conflicting views on how a rebellion should take place. Finally, when Julia and Winston are debating rebellion, Winston tells Julia that she is “...only a rebel from the waist down” (156). Winston thinks Julia is only a supporter of the rebellion for the benefits of black market items and to engage in illicit activities. This shows that Julia and Winston disagree on some topics.
