Winston Smith vs. Edward Snowden In 1984, it almost seemed like the Inner Party was going to acquire all the power in the world, and no one would stop them from doing just that. Then came Winston Smith, a minor member of the Inner Party who hates the totalitarian control and enforced repression that are characteristic of his government, which could get him killed. The world today has a very similar person to Winston Smith, Edward Snowden, the man who leaked the information explaining the NSA searches and watches everything everyone does online. Edward Snowden is our very own modern day Winston Smith because they are both men working for a party that assured them a relative amount of safety, both of them rebelled against their governments, and both were trying to hide secrets from the government. He was even described as a diligent and skillful worker, but he had dreamt of rebelling against Big Brother.
