Conflict in Wonder and A Children’s Bible Facing conflict can tell a lot about a person. An in-depth analysis of the conflict in both Wonder and A Children’s Bible reveals several significant differences and similarities. While conflict allows the main characters in each novel to grow as individuals, they experience different types of conflict. Also, Wonder provides more insight into the conflict of the main characters compared to A Children’s Bible due to the rotating point of view between the main characters. In both books, conflict helps the protagonists develop into more mature individuals. A key example of social conflict in Wonder is Auggie getting bullied because of his facial deformity. “Rat boy. Freak. Freddy Frueger. E.T. Gross out. Lizard face. Mutant. I know all the names they call me”(Palacio 79). In middle school, social hierarchy is of utmost importance to students which is why they pick on him. Auggie’s lack of popularity forces characters to choose between true friendship and popularity. This results in a war between the kids looking out for Auggie and the bully, Jullian’s side. On the other hand, conflict is different in A Children’s Bible as a hurricane strikes the summer house with multiple families staying there. “The storm hit-full force in the middle of the night”(Millet 61). In A Children’s Bible, Evie makes Jack and Shel hide when a group of men with guns show up at the house. “There are guys with guns here. You and Shel need to grab some camping gear and run”(Millet 148). This can be viewed as a limitation as Jack is most likely scared to leave his sister. It would be helpful to have Jack’s side of the story to see his thoughts and to get more insight into his character. An important example in Wonder is August’s sister, Via. Auggie has had twenty-seven surgeries since birth, which puts the spotlight on him. “August is the sun. Me and Mom and Dad are the planets orbiting the sun”(Palacio 82). Taking on her perspective gives additional insight into her concerns and problems. She tries her best not to show her true thoughts because living with Auggie after you’ve seen someone go through what he goes through, it feels kind of crazy to complain (Palacio 83). It is clear from Via’s perspective that she cares about her brother and is an empathetic
