The Great Gatsby Compared to Wuthering Heights

The roaring 20s, glamorous and carefree. The unforgiving, mysterious 19th century moors of England. While these times and places might seems vastly different, the stories taking place within them are very much alike. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is set in the 1920s of New York City and tells the story of the wealthy Jay Gatsby and his love for Daisy Buchanan. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte takes place on the moors of 1th century Yorkshire, and describes Heathcliff’s revenge story brought on by his strong love for Catherine. While these stories may seem different on the surface, if you begin looking, you’ll find just how similar they are.
One of the main similarities between these two stories is the resemblance between the protagonists; Jay Gatsby and Heathcliff. They are both male protagonists driven by their love for a woman. Gatsby’s motivation throughout the entire novel is his attempt to win Daisy, the girl he loved in his past, back. Daisy, however, shuns him because he is not wealthy enough for her. For one, Heathcliff is much more bitter and resentful than Gatsby is, focusing more on getting revenge on Catherine and the Lintons for Catherine’s choice rather than trying to win her back, as Gatsby tries to do with Daisy. Catherine is much more manipulative than Daisy. Daisy is a very passive character and cares about herself and her own well-being more than getting involved in anything too serious, while Catherine actively manipulates Heathcliff’s and Edgar’s emotions to her own advantage. Daisy doesn’t get involved in the dispute between Gatsby and Tom until Gatsby forces her to become involved. In fact, she actually tries to stop the fight from happening so she won’t have to get
