In the excerpt from Alice Walker’s short story “Everyday Use”, Wangero tries to persuade her mother to give her the two quilts by using pathos and allegory. The theme of this short story is that if the technique of persuasion isn't working, getting angry might make the situation worse. She does not succeed in using these techniques and ends up making her mother even more mad. From Wangeros perspective, she wants to keep the quilts to remember her heritage, but because she insulted the quilts before her mother isn’t very willing to give her them. Wangero uses pathos to try to persuade her mother because she gets very angry when she is told that she planned on giving Maggie the quilts.
