Simon As A Christ Figure Essay

552 Words3 Pages

William Golding portrays Simon as a Christ figure by having Simon’s actions mimic those of Jesus. While Simon is walking through the Jungle, he gives some littleuns some fruit he just picked from the branches that were too high for them to reach. This is significant because in the bible, Jesus believed everyone should help out and give to those who do not have necessities such as food, clothing, and shelter. Simon gave food to the littleuns who were not able to obtain it themselves. After Piggy’s specs were knocked of he cried out ”’My Specs!’ He went crouching and feeling over the rocks but Simon, who got there first, found them for him’”(71). This is important because Jesus was a miracle worker who could turn water into wine and give sight back to the blind. Although Simon did not perform a miracle, he was able to give Piggy his sight back by giving his specs to him. …show more content…

When Ralph came back to the castle rock, Robert said ”’He’s going to beat up Wilfred.’ … ‘He didn’t say. He got angry and made us tie Wilfred up. He’s been’-he giggled excitedly-‘he’s been tied up for two hours”(159). This is shows that the boys are now blindly following Jack’s orders to the extremes when they do not even question why they are going to beat up a boy. Before Simon’s death the boys would have wanted to know why they were beating up someone. In the past they would have been more soft spoken and would not have been open and excited about it. When Ralph and Piggy came to get Piggy’s glasses back, Roger pulled the lever that released the builder which killed Piggy. This is important because it shows how the boys’ actions are escalating. At first they killed a littlun by neglect when they caught the forest on fire. Next, the “accidently” killed Simon when they believed he was the beast. Now, they are purposely killing the boys that they do not get along
